BASEBALL PLAYERS’ LAST NAMES/NICKNAMES

Why do managers INSIST on creating nicknames from baseball players’ last names? Schoenweiss = Schoie? Farnsworth = Farnsie? Church = Churchie? What’s wrong with using their first names? It’s not as if there are a ton of Scott’s or Ryan’s running around on the Mets bench. And why is it that some players don’t get nicknames? Is it a sign of respect (Jeter although I have heard the manager refer to him as Jete)?

Is this just one more thing I don’t get because I’m a girl?
