LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! CHILDREN OF ALL AGES …

Tuesday night, as we drove home, we saw elephants and camels in the parking lot of the local racetrack which could mean only one thing – the circus is in town. This is not the Ringling Brothers operation we’re talking about here – rather it is the Cole Brothers Circus which is a very small outfit. One tent, three elephants, two camels, four horses (and a very intelligent mule), and a group of dogs, which may have been my favorite act of all.

It reminded me very much of Circus Shoes by Noel Streatfield. Everyone played multiple roles. One of the acrobats sold us our tickets in the booth, another one showed us to our seats. There were family acts, including children. There was even a 10 year old in the high-wire act.

Some of the acts were amazing like the three motorcycles in the mesh metal ball circling around and flipping upside down without decapitating each other. Others fell short … clowns, I’m sorry but you really were fairly pathetic. And then there were the animals. In my mind, it’s going to take a lot for an animal act to fail.

And they didn’t let me down. I love the circus – even the little ones!
