RIP – books

***Updated to add book review links***
***Updated 9/28 to add last of my reviews***

Carl, over at Stainless Steel Droppings, is hosting the 3rd annual RIP reading challenge. The challenge is to read books from one or more of the following categories between September 1 and October 31 (duh), 2008 –
Mystery
Suspense
Thriller
Dark Fantasy
Gothic
Horror
Supernatural
You can choose to read on one of three levels – Peril the 1st where you read 4 books, Peril the 2nd where you read 3 books, and Peril the 3rd where you read 2 books. Since reading books is not one of my problems, I have chosen to do

So now I have to choose 4 spooky books to read between now and Halloween. First up is Dracula by Bram Stoker. It’s really amazing that I, as an English Major in college and a voracious reader, have never read Dracula, and there’s a perfectly logical explanation for that. I’m sure it’s going to scary the ever-loving life out of me. I know, I know – Buffy and Angel fan RIGHT HERE! But there’s something about the king of all vampires that just creeps me out. Maybe it’s the way he’s been portrayed in movies (and believe me, the only way I’ve seen those has been in previews and peeking through hands covering eyes), or maybe it’s the comic book I read as a child that had him climbing down the wall with the child in a sack. Whatever it is (the latter), I have avoided him like the plague. However, since I am now *cough* ty one, I’m hoping I can handle it. Besides, I have a plan. Dracula will be my at work reading book, to be read at lunch time when it is VERY sunny out, and I will have another, fluffier, book to read before falling asleep. And I may sleep with my light on. And wear my cross every night. Besides I have my great protectors to keep me safe *snort* (as the cats head for the hills.)

As far as my other picks, they will be picked from the following:

Tithe by Holly Black review here

At least one of the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers, since everyone (and by that I mean everyone of any importance so if you’re not talking about them, start chatting) is talking about them. Twilight review here

The Gabriel Hounds by Mary Stewart

My Brother MichaelThe Moon-Spinners by Mary Stewart review here

Monster by Jonathan Kellerman

And after spending quite a bit of time on Jonathan Kellerman’s site, I will add something by his son Jesse Kellerman to the list.

And because it’s now becoming a family affair, better throw something by Faye Kellerman on the fire too.

Something by Kathy Reichs

Something by Jeffrey Deaver

A new series (to me) by Joanne Fluke review here

Okay, I think I have enough to choose from. Let the reading begin! And if you see a lone light in the distance, in the middle of the night, you know who’s sleeping (or trying to) there:D

Oh yeah, and if you want to read people’s reviews of the books they’ve read, head on over here and check ’em out!

In college we read Dracula, but also Frankenstein and Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde. They are all GREAT!!! So here’s a suggestion to maybe read those last two as well!

Love the choices. I think that Kathy Reichs and Jeffrey Deaver might be scarier for you than Dracula… We will have to pass around the Stephanie Meyers. P, like any cat worth their salt, chose to lay on the bad ankle last night…

I haven’t read any of the Twilight series yet. Can you believe it? I promise I will. 🙂

As far as the Twilight Saga goes…start at the beginning. They really don’t work out of order!I know you have your books chosen (or at least semi-chosen), but think about reading <>A Certain Slant of Light<> by Laura Whitcomb sometime. It’s not scary, but it’s about a girl who calls herself “Light”..she’s been dead for over 100 years, and she’s been “haunting” people ever since. One of my very favorites.Oh, and <>Tithe<> is excellent. I just finally read the whole trilogy (I’d read the first two, but I just got <>Ironside<>) and I just adore them. Dark and scary, but excellent.Okay, that’s a ramble…sorry…🙂

Nice choices, I’ll need to look into some of these.

Thank you so much for joining in, I’m so thrilled to have you…even more thrilled to see that you’re reading Dracula. It is far and away one of my favorite books of all time. Deliciously creepy but also delicious in the language and atmosphere of the time the story was written. I hope you post your thoughts, I’d love to know what you think of it when you are done.
